FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys just sent a blunt message ahead of their upcoming clash with the Chicago Bears: in Dallas, discipline is non-negotiable.
Less than 48 hours before Sunday’s matchup, rookie offensive tackle Nathan Thomas — a 2025 draft pick — arrived late and visibly intoxicated to the team’s walkthrough at The Star. According to multiple sources, the smell of alcohol was unmistakable.
Head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t hesitate.
“You want to party?” McCarthy’s voice echoed across the practice field, freezing teammates mid-stretch.
“Fine. You can party unemployed. Pack your things. You’re done here.”
Thomas reportedly had gone out on the team’s off-hours, returning to the facility only hours before the crucial practice. For a franchise that preaches preparation and accountability, it was an unforgivable breach.
One veteran Cowboy summed it up: “There’s a line you don’t cross, especially when you haven’t earned your spot yet.”
Thomas, a promising sixth-round pick praised for his size and versatility, had been getting reps at both tackle spots in camp. But the Cowboys have long stressed that character matters just as much as talent. Once he broke that trust, there was no going back.
Later, McCarthy emphasized, “The star on your helmet means something. We don’t cut guys on emotion. We cut them when they don’t respect the standard. That’s how we protect the culture here.”
By Friday morning, Thomas had cleaned out his locker. The Cowboys officially waived him that afternoon. He did not speak to the media.
