SMART MOVE: Nick Chubb to Sign With Chiefs to Strengthen Backfield Alongside Pacheco

Kansas City, MO – April 27, 2025
The Kansas City Chiefs made headlines again Sunday, agreeing to sign former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb to a one-year, $5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
But while many fans celebrate the move, others are asking:
Is this really the piece that gets the Chiefs back to the top? Or are we chasing ghosts of the past?

The Allure of Nick Chubb

No doubt, Chubb’s resume demands respect:

  • 6,511 career rushing yards

  • Four Pro Bowls

  • PFF grade of 82.3 in 2024 — even after major injuries

Andy Reid called him a “relentless force,” a physical runner who can grind down defenses and help balance an offense that too often leans entirely on Patrick Mahomes’ magic.

On paper, pairing Chubb with Isiah Pacheco looks like a dream — a brutal 1-2 punch to wear out defenses deep into January.

The Cold Reality: Buyer Beware?

But let’s be real:
Nick Chubb is 29 years old.
Coming off a torn ACL, MCL, and a broken foot.

The Bills passed. The Browns, the team that built their offense around him for half a decade, walked away after drafting two rookies.
That should raise serious red flags — not just nostalgia.

Running backs rarely bounce back from injuries at this age. Especially ones who thrived on power, cuts, and yards after contact.

Are we expecting Chubb to magically become the Chubb of 2020? Or are we hoping against the odds?

Is This What Mahomes Really Needed?

Let’s not forget:
The Chiefs’ bigger issues in Super Bowl LIX weren’t just running the ball — it was the offensive line collapsing and receivers failing to separate.

Did signing Chubb fix that?
No.

  • Jawaan Taylor is gone.

  • Rashee Rice could face suspension.

  • We still lack a true WR1.

Instead of loading up weapons or beefing up the line, we dropped $5 million on a running back who hasn’t posted a full healthy season in two years.

Bottom Line: High Reward, Even Higher Risk

Sure, if Chubb stays healthy, he could give Kansas City a punishing ground game they haven’t had since Kareem Hunt’s rookie season.

But if he struggles, or worse — gets hurt again —
this signing will look less like a masterstroke…
and more like a desperate swing at recapturing a glory that’s already passed.

The Chiefs are betting big on Nick Chubb’s redemption.
Here’s hoping they don’t end up holding an empty hand when the stakes are highest.

Chiefs Kingdom, what do you think? Are we building smarter — or just dreaming harder?
