Steelers Land a Veteran WR in Post-Draft Surprise Signing

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a major addition to their wide receiver room earlier this offseason when they traded for DK Metcalf.

The Steelers reportedly brought in another veteran Monday, but this signing won’t come with nearly the same amount of fanfare that acquiring Metcalf did.

According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the Steelers signed wide receiver Robert Woods to a one-year deal. Pittsburgh represents the fifth NFL team for the 33-year-old Woods, who is set to play in his 13th season in the league.

Woods gives added depth to Pittsburgh’s pass-catching unit and a reliable target who doesn’t need the ball all the time — even though at this moment Woods doesn’t know who exactly will be throwing passes to him next season for the Steelers.

Woods played the last two seasons with the Houston Texans, but his production indicates he is well past his prime. The 6-foot, 193-pound pass-catcher registered career lows in receptions (20), receiving yards (203) and touchdowns (0) while playing 15 games this past season.

It has been five seasons since Woods accumulated more than 600 yards receiving in a single season. Woods put together back-to-back 90-reception seasons in 2019 and 2020, and also had a combined 2,070 yards receiving with eight touchdowns over that two-year span.

The Steelers certainly won’t get that type of production from Woods, but they have someone who knows how to play the position and can be a leader for the offense.
