What started as a simple book promotion has turned into a full media circus for New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick.
Belichick recently appeared on “CBS Sunday Morning” to discuss his new book, “The Art of Winning,” but the focus of the interview eventually shifted to Jordon Hudson, Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend.
Hudson was the only person to accompany Belichick to the interview, and she did more than just provide moral support for the University of North Carolina head coach. Hudson took charge of the interview, most notably shooting down a question about where she and Belichick met.
Hudson’s behavior during the now-viral interview drew scrutiny from people at UNC and the general public alike, prompting Belichick to formally defend his girlfriend’s actions.
“She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track,” Belichick said in a statement released by UNC on Wednesday.
Belichick seemingly gave Hudson the authority to control what was discussed during the interview. He then described his relationship with Hudson as “personal and professional,” furthering speculation that she influences Belichick’s decision-making, which could impact his tenure with the Tar Heels.
After justifying his girlfriend’s actions, Belichick accused CBS News of framing the interview to paint Hudson in a bad light.
“The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true,” per the statement.
Whether or not the accusations are true, the drama surrounding Belichick and his girlfriend is bringing unnecessary distractions to his first season at Chapel Hill.
