Steelers Veteran LB Elandon Roberts Accepts Low Salary: “I Don’t Need Money to Love Football”

In an era where contracts regularly cross the $100 million mark, Elandon Roberts stands apart — not for his stats, but for his mindset.

The 9-year NFL veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker has signed a 1-year, $3.01 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders for the 2025 season, including $2.5 million fully guaranteed. While many see it as modest by today’s standards, Roberts made his stance clear in a recent interview:

“I’ve never played this game for money. I play because I love it. Period.”

Roberts, 30, spent two hard-nosed seasons in Pittsburgh, becoming a fan favorite for his physical style, locker room leadership, and no-nonsense presence on the field. He led the team in tackles in 2023 and remained a steady contributor in 2024 despite a younger defense forming around him.

His decision to sign a low-cost deal with the Raiders raised eyebrows — especially when other veteran linebackers secured contracts in the $5–8 million range. But for Roberts, legacy and leadership mean more than figures.

“At this point in my career, I want to be where I’m needed, not just where I’m paid.”

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce praised the signing, calling Roberts “a tone-setter” and “the kind of pro every locker room needs.” With a young Raiders defense still finding its voice, Roberts could serve as both a stopgap starter and a mentor for the next generation.

Steelers fans were quick to salute their former LB on social media. One top comment read:

“No flash, all grit. That’s a real Steeler right there.”

As the 2025 season nears, Elandon Roberts may not be on the highest-paid list — but his presence will be felt loud and clear. And as he says himself, “The game gave me everything. Playing is how I give back.”
