Eagles Predicted to Target Post-June 1 Cut Players for “Most Important Position”

With the June 1 deadline approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles may once again find value not through splashy trades or blockbuster signings – but by capitalizing on timing and other teams’ tough decisions.

According to a recent breakdown by Inside the Iggles, the Eagles are expected to target players released after June 1, specifically at what’s being called the “most important position outside of quarterback” — the defensive line.

The reasoning is clear. The Eagles lost Milton Williams in free agency and recently traded Bryce Huff to the 49ers, opening up glaring gaps in the rotation. Though Philadelphia still boasts star power up front — most notably Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis — the depth behind them is untested and uncertain.

“Jalen Carter alone makes the reigning champions formidable,” CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin noted, “but Milton Williams’ exit could put added pressure on Davis to help Vic Fangio’s defense stay afloat.”

It’s not just defensive tackle where the Eagles are watching the market. The edge position is undergoing major changes too. With Josh Sweat gone, and Huff no longer in the picture, Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt are slated to take on larger roles. Meanwhile, veterans Azeez Ojulari, Josh Uche, and Patrick Johnson have been added for depth — but questions remain about consistency and fit in Fangio’s complex scheme.

That’s where post-June 1 cuts come in.

Once that date passes, teams around the league can offload veteran contracts with reduced cap penalties. That creates a pool of experienced talent suddenly available — and Philly may pounce. Whether it’s a rotational DT, a hybrid edge rusher, or a versatile veteran who can help groom the younger players, Howie Roseman is expected to monitor the wire closely.

“There are bodies on the line,” one Eagles insider said, “but not enough answers. That’s what June 1 is for.”

Names haven’t surfaced publicly, but possible targets include experienced vets who may be cap casualties on D-line heavy teams — think Dawuane Smoot, Bilal Nichols, or even a surprise name like Shelby Harris if available.

And make no mistake: these aren’t just depth moves. The front seven remains the beating heart of Vic Fangio’s defense. If one more injury happens, the Eagles could quickly find themselves vulnerable up the middle — something playoff-caliber teams will exploit.

“You don’t win in January if you’re soft in the trenches,” a former Eagles scout reminded. “That’s why this post-June 1 window matters.”

With the Super Bowl window wide open and a tough NFC East slate ahead, don’t be surprised if Philadelphia becomes one of the busiest teams in early June.
