Bills DC Bobby Babich Hails Rookie Defender as the ‘Brains of Camp’

Babich getting into calling Bills defense

Buffalo’s training camp this summer is a showcase of new talent, with coaches searching for difference-makers up front. Among the crowded defensive line group, one rookie is quietly capturing everyone’s attention.

While much of the hype focuses on pure athleticism and power, a fresh face has been making an impact in ways that go beyond the stat sheet. The defensive staff is watching closely as camp intensity ramps up.

With the 109th pick in the fourth round, the Bills selected Deone Walker, a standout defensive tackle from Kentucky who quickly turned heads in Orchard Park with his football IQ and relentless approach.

Defensive Coordinator Bobby Babich was quick to praise his new rookie: “Speed fades. Strength breaks. But intelligence? That wins games. He sees the field like a veteran, thinks faster than defenders move — that’s why he’s the steal of this draft.”

Walker enters the league after a dominant college career, starting 36 of 37 games and tallying 132 tackles, 23.0 tackles for loss, and 10.0 sacks—an impressive résumé for a player of his age.

His breakout sophomore season included 55 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, earning him Third Team All-American and First Team All-SEC honors, cementing his status as a top interior disruptor.

Despite battling injury in his junior year, Walker still managed 37 tackles and multiple all-conference accolades. Coaches and analysts raved about his instincts, leadership, and relentless motor in the trenches.

Buffalo’s fans have noticed the rookie’s rapid adjustment, with social media buzzing about his ability to read plays and communicate at the line—traits that have made him a favorite in the locker room already.

As the competition for snaps heats up, Deone Walker’s intelligence and work ethic are setting him apart. If camp is any indication, the Bills may have found the brains—and the steal—of the 2025 draft.
