Bills Bring Hometown Veteran Back Home, Signing Practice Squad Insurance Ahead of Opener

Buffalo, NY – September 4, 2025

The Buffalo Bills have made a roster move that carries both practical value and emotional weight. With uncertainty lingering at kicker, the team turned to one of the NFL’s most trusted veterans to provide insurance for Week 1.

Tyler Bass continues to battle hip and groin issues, leaving his availability in doubt for Sunday night’s opener against the Ravens. To cover the possibility of his absence, the front office acted quickly, bringing in a player whose story connects directly to the city.

That player is Matt Prater, the 40-year-old kicker who was born and raised in Buffalo. After nearly two decades in the NFL, he finally gets to suit up for his hometown team.

“I was born in Buffalo, raised on these streets, and dreamed of wearing this jersey since I was a kid,” Prater said. “At 40, to finally come home and wear the Bills colors isn’t just football — it’s life coming full circle. This city raised me, and now I get to give everything I have left back to it.”

Prater spent the last four seasons with Arizona, where he made 86 of 101 field goals. Over his career, he has converted 407 of 487 attempts, including an NFL-best 81 from 50 yards or more. His veteran presence now gives Buffalo stability while Bass recovers.

The Bills also announced several other moves. Special teams ace Sam Franklin was signed to the active roster, with defensive tackle DeWayne Carter moving to injured reserve to make room. Wide receiver Gabe Davis rejoined the practice squad, though he begins this stint on the injured list.

For Buffalo, this week’s transactions are about more than filling holes. They’re about reinforcing culture, rewarding loyalty, and reminding fans that sometimes football’s greatest stories come full circle.

As the opener approaches, the Bills now have both insurance on the field and inspiration in the locker room — the kind of balance every contender needs.
