Free-agent safety Justin Simmons, known for intercepting Patrick Mahomes six times, expressed reluctance to join the Kansas City Chiefs despite their interest. Speaking on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams on Tuesday, the former Denver Broncos Pro Bowler admitted his competitive disdain for the Chiefs, rooted in their dominance. “I’ve always been publicly against Kansas City because they’re a really good team,” Simmons said. “It’s ingrained in me to beat them.”
Simmons, who has a 1-13 career record against Mahomes, including a 1-12 stint with the Broncos and a 0-1 record with the Falcons, picked off the Chiefs’ quarterback in Kansas City’s 22-17 win last season. After leaving Denver in March 2024 as a salary-cap casualty, Simmons joined the Falcons, starting 16 games and recording two interceptions. With 32 career interceptions, he remains one of the top available free agents.
Despite the Chiefs’ need for a safety after losing Justin Reid to New Orleans, Simmons is hesitant. He recalled Josh Jacobs’ similar refusal to join Kansas City in 2024, opting for Green Bay to compete against them. “I feel the exact same way,” Simmons said. “I want to be the team that beats them.” While not entirely closing the door, Simmons’ heart leans toward a rival.
