Green Bay Native Retires at 27, Ending 5-Year NFL Career After Breaking Neck in Staircase Fall

Veteran Offensive Lineman Retires Just Days Into First Training Camp With Commanders

NFL training camps are filled with optimism each summer, but news from a Green Bay native has brought a somber reminder of the game’s fragility. At just 27, a promising NFL career has come to a sudden end after a tragic accident at home.

Renowned for his determination and team-first mentality, the veteran starter suffered a catastrophic fall down a staircase, fracturing his cervical vertebra. The injury forced a heart-wrenching decision: an early retirement from the game he fought so hard to play.

Nate Herbig, born and raised in Green Bay, anchored the Steelers’ offensive line in 2023 before being placed on the Washington Commanders’ reserve/retired list. His journey from undrafted rookie to respected NFL starter now closes with this life-altering setback.

“He was a true professional,” said Commanders coach Dan Quinn, via reporter Zach Selby. “Nate played 61 games, starting 31, and his toughness was inspiring. We wish him strength and a smooth recovery.”

The accident happened during the offseason and required urgent surgery. Doctors made it clear that returning to football could risk permanent, life-changing harm, prompting Herbig to step away at just 27.

Herbig’s career began with the Eagles in 2019, logging 33 games and 17 starts. His 2023 move to Pittsburgh saw him start all 17 games, earning recognition for a penalty-free season and reliable pass protection.

Injuries followed him throughout his career, including a torn rotator cuff that sidelined him for all of 2024. But it was the recent neck injury that proved insurmountable, ending a journey that won admiration from teammates and coaches across the league.

Green Bay fans and the NFL community have expressed support and appreciation for Herbig’s hard work and resilience. His penalty-free 2023 and leadership made him a favorite wherever he played.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin captured the sentiment: “Nate brought heart to our line. His attitude set the standard every day.” The football world now stands behind Herbig as he begins the next stage of recovery.Herbig’s story is a sobering reminder of football’s risks and the unpredictability of life.

As the NFL season draws near, his retirement asks fans everywhere to salute the sport’s unheralded warriors.Stay tuned to NFL.com for more on this story and other league updates.
