Chiefs May Have Found a Hidden Gem — Matt Nagy Calls Rookie the “Steal of Camp”

Kansas City’s training camp this year is filled with competition, with coaches searching for new playmakers to elevate the offense. Several young faces are getting their chance, but one rookie is quietly making his mark.

While many eyes have been on the big names and fastest forty times, a lesser-known wide receiver has begun to separate himself through his approach and understanding of the game. Coaches have taken note as the days progress.

Drafted in the fourth round, pick 133, this Utah State product brings more than just athleticism. Jalen Royals has impressed the offensive staff with his poise, adaptability, and sharp football instincts during every session.

Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy didn’t hold back his praise: “Most rookies rely on speed or brute strength. He’s not most rookies. He dissects the game like a veteran — fast, smart, calculated. Around here, we don’t just look for athletes. We build football minds. And that’s why he’s not just the steal of this draft — he’s a future problem for every defense out there.”

Royals arrived in Kansas City with serious college credentials, earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors in 2023 after 71 catches, 1,080 yards, and 15 touchdowns, followed by another productive, though injury-shortened, senior season.

Now, the Chiefs envision him as a depth receiver and potential kick return option, hoping his speed and vision can add another layer to the offense in the wake of Marquise Brown’s departure and the arrival of Xavier Worthy.

Fans on social media have taken notice, calling Royals a possible “new weapon for Mahomes” and touting his potential to make an immediate impact as a versatile chess piece in Andy Reid’s attack.

As camp continues, all eyes are on how Jalen Royals will capitalize on his early momentum. If the praise holds true, Kansas City may have found the steal of this year’s draft class
