Kansas City Chiefs Reach Verbal Agreement to Sign Former Four-Time All-Pro Before Final Preseason Game

The Kansas City Chiefs, looking to recover from two straight preseason losses, have turned to veteran help in the secondary. Reports indicate the team has reached a verbal agreement just before their final preseason matchup.

With coverage breakdowns plaguing the defense and leadership voids evident, Kansas City’s front office moved quickly. The timing suggests urgency, as the organization prepares for Week 3 of the preseason under significant scrutiny.

That urgency has led to an agreement with former Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons safety Justin Simmons, one of the NFL’s most decorated defenders of the last decade. The deal is reportedly worth $4 million for one season.

“He isn’t just a playmaker—he’s a tone-setter,” an AFC scout said when asked about the signing. “He reads quarterbacks at an elite level, makes game-changing plays, and keeps defenses accountable every snap.”

Simmons brings with him an impressive résumé. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and a four-time Second-Team All-Pro selection, earning recognition in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023 for his ball-hawking ability and consistent coverage skills.

Over his career, Simmons has totaled 30 interceptions, including a league-leading six in 2022. In the past five seasons alone, he has tallied 23 picks, more than any other safety in professional football.

Beyond turnovers, his production remains balanced. Simmons has recorded 584 tackles, 64 pass breakups, three sacks, and five forced fumbles. In 2024 with Atlanta, he notched 93 tackles and 15 deflections, earning PFF’s top safety grade.

For Kansas City, the move represents both urgency and ambition. With questions still swirling around their defense, Simmons is expected to provide veteran stability and leadership as the Chiefs attempt to reset before the regular season begins.
