Kansas City, MO – Just days before final cuts, Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Jalen Carter Jr. has decided to step away from the 53-man roster battle to return home and care for his seriously ill parents.
Carter, 23, joined Kansas City as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft. In the preseason, he impressed with 74 yards on 8 carries and a 41-yard touchdown burst against the New Orleans Saints—followed by a passionate celebration with Chiefs Kingdom in Arrowhead—showing strong depth potential behind Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Keaontay Ingram.
Head coach Andy Reid praised him after the game: “Jalen runs with real vision and toughness. He’s the kind of competitor you love to coach, and he’s earned respect in this locker room.”
Within hours, Carter issued a heartfelt statement, putting family above football:
“Thank you Kansas City Chiefs for the amazing opportunity to live out my NFL dream. But right now, my parents—who sacrificed everything for me—are battling illness. My father is struggling with heart failure, and my mother is undergoing chemotherapy. I need to be with them. The NFL is a dream, but family is my foundation. Thank you, Chiefs Kingdom, and I hope to be back soon. #ChiefsKingdom”
General manager Brett Veach expressed full support: “Jalen is a gifted young player and an even better person. We respect his choice to put family first, and the door will always be open for him here in Kansas City.”
Carter’s decision doesn’t drastically affect the Chiefs’ RB depth—anchored by Pacheco and supported by Edwards-Helaire—but it underscores a greater truth: football is more than stats and trophies; it’s about loyalty, sacrifice, and human values.
On social media, fans rallied behind the hashtag #JalenStrong. If his family’s health stabilizes, Carter could make another run at the NFL in 2026—possibly returning to Kansas City’s practice squad—with his preseason highlights keeping his dream alive.
