PACKERS PRIDE: Rashan Gary celebrates career milestone with a powerful message that ignites all of Green Bay

Rashan Gary’s journey to becoming one of the Green Bay Packers’ foundational leaders wasn’t built overnight. It’s been a slow burn-one that started with sky-high expectations and has now crystallized into a role that carries both weight and purpose.

From the moment Gary stepped onto the field at Paramus Catholic in New Jersey, the spotlight found him. He was the nation’s top high school recruit, a five-star phenom with a rare blend of size, speed, and motor. At Michigan, he turned that promise into production over three seasons before being selected 12th overall by the Packers in the 2019 NFL Draft.

But even top picks have to wait their turn in the NFL, and Gary’s early years were spent learning behind veterans Za’Darius and Preston Smith-two free-agent signings who helped revitalize Green Bay’s pass rush. When Za’Darius missed most of the 2021 season with a back injury, Gary stepped into a starting role and didn’t look back. His emergence wasn’t just about filling a gap-it was about creating his own identity on a defense that was starting to shoulder more of the team’s burden as Aaron Rodgers aged and the offense evolved.

By last season, Gary had become much more than just a pass rusher. Former defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich called him “the engine” of the defense-a tone-setter whose energy and production rippled through the entire unit.

And now, in the wake of the Kenny Clark trade-the veteran defensive tackle was shipped out in the blockbuster deal that brought in Micah Parsons-Gary finds himself as the longest-tenured player on Green Bay’s defense. He’s no longer the rising star. He’s the guy others look to.

That leadership role became official this week when Gary was named a team captain for the first time in his football career. It’s a title that carries weight, not just because of the responsibilities, but because it came from within-voted on by the coaches and, more importantly, his teammates.

“Man, it’s a blessing and honor, shoot a privilege,” Gary said after the Packers’ 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions. “Out of all teams, to have all my teammates vote me as a captain, it’s something I’ve always dreamed of, something I prayed for.

It’s something I won’t take for granted. Anytime I wear that ‘C,’ I’m going to lead that way.”

And lead he did.

In his first game wearing the captain’s patch, Gary was a force. He shared a third-quarter sack with Lukas Van Ness, then turned in a highlight-reel play in the fourth-sacking both quarterback Jared Goff and left tackle Taylor Decker on the same snap, nearly forcing a safety. That play marked the 40th sack of Gary’s career, making him just the eighth player in Packers history to hit that milestone since sacks became an official stat in 1982.

That’s the kind of impact Green Bay needs from Gary-not just flashes, but sustained, game-altering performances. With Parsons now in the fold and young talent like Van Ness, Karl Brooks, and Devonte Wyatt rounding out the front, this defense has the pieces to be something special. But it starts with consistency, and that’s where Gary’s mindset shines.

For Parsons, who saw his share of double-teams from the Lions, the supporting cast around him is what makes this group dangerous.

“You look at that defense, a lot of people underestimated those guys that are going to step up with the trade,” Parsons said. “We got some real dawgs up front… You see Van Ness, you see K.B., Rashan.

I don’t got to be in a rush to get back. This team is so loaded, and the sky’s the limit.”

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley echoed that sentiment, pointing to Gary’s strong training camp and the opportunities created by Parsons’ presence.

“I think Rashan had a really good camp and he’s playing at a high level,” Hafley said. “Any time you bring in an elite rusher like Micah, there’s probably going to be a lot more one-on-one opportunities to win… and I think they are excited.”

That excitement needs to translate to consistency. Last season, Green Bay had moments of dominance-like the eight-sack outing against Tennessee-but struggled to string those performances together. If this defense is going to take the next step, it has to be about more than just one-off showcases.

With the Washington Commanders coming to Lambeau on Thursday night, Gary knows the formula: preparation, discipline, and effort.

“Just being consistent throughout the whole week of preparation,” he said. “Falling back on our preparation, understanding how they wanted to attack us, and once again, just everybody doing their one-eleventh, being where they’re supposed to be, making the routine plays, not getting tired of making the routine plays and playing with high effort.”

Green Bay’s defense doesn’t just have potential-it has teeth. And with Rashan Gary now wearing the “C,” it also has a heartbeat.
