Jaylen Watson: From Underdog to Chiefs’ Defensive Weapon

Once overlooked, now unmissable – Jaylen Watson’s rise is a story every Chiefs fan should know.
Jaylen Watson’s journey to the NFL is nothing short of inspiring. Born on September 17, 1998, in Augusta, Georgia, Watson wasn’t a highly-touted prospect out of high school. Instead, he took the long road—through community college, setbacks, and doubts—before finding his place with the Kansas City Chiefs.

After starting his college career at Ventura College in California, Watson transferred to Washington State University. There, he made a name for himself as a tough, physical cornerback with great length and instincts. Still, he was far from a guaranteed NFL star.

The Chiefs took a chance on him in the 7th round of the 2022 NFL Draft (pick No. 243 overall). For many players, that late of a draft slot means a short career. But Watson had other plans.

In just his rookie season, he delivered one of the most unforgettable plays of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run: a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. That moment instantly made him a fan favorite and showed that he belonged on the biggest stage.

Since then, Watson has continued to carve out a role in Kansas City’s secondary. While not always the star of the defense, his reliability, physicality, and knack for making plays in big moments have earned him respect from teammates and coaches alike.

As the Chiefs chase another Lombardi Trophy, Jaylen Watson’s journey from overlooked prospect to trusted defender serves as a reminder: greatness can come from the most unexpected places.
