Kansas City, MO – September 25, 2025

As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their Week 4 clash against the undefeated Ravens, veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of his life — one that still shapes the way he approaches the game and his role as a mentor to younger teammates.

Valdes-Scantling revealed that his father raised him largely on his own after a devastating family setback during his teenage years. A serious work accident forced his dad to leave his job at an electrical company in St. Petersburg, Florida. In the months that followed, his mother left the household, leaving his father to shoulder the responsibility of raising his children alone.

“My mom left when my dad had that accident,” Valdes-Scantling said. “Since then, my father has been both strict and nurturing. He taught me how to be a man, but also how to be kind. I love him so much.”

His father’s perseverance became the foundation of Valdes-Scantling’s life. Despite chronic pain and financial strain, he instilled discipline, humility, and resilience in his son, encouraging him to excel in both football and track and field before ultimately choosing the gridiron.

“He gave me the freedom to choose my own path,” Valdes-Scantling recalled. “But he also reminded me to stay humble — to never act like I was bigger than the game.”

Since entering the NFL in 2018, Valdes-Scantling has become a dynamic deep threat, helping the Chiefs stretch the field and win another Super Bowl alongside Patrick Mahomes. Yet behind every catch and every milestone, he says, is the influence of his father.

“Everything I do is for him — he gave me everything,” Valdes-Scantling said.

That perspective is driving his 2025 season. After a quiet start in Weeks 1 and 2, he delivered a breakout performance in Week 3 against the New York Giants with five receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown to spark a comeback victory. Through three games, he has 11 catches for 169 yards and one score, reaffirming his role as a trusted veteran in Kansas City’s receiving corps.

For Chiefs fans, Valdes-Scantling’s story adds even more depth to the fire he brings each Sunday. His father remains a fixture at Arrowhead Stadium, watching his son honor the sacrifices that shaped their family. As the Chiefs enter a pivotal Week 4 clash with Ravens, Marquez Valdes-Scantling is carrying not only the team’s hopes but also the enduring inspiration of a father who never gave up.
