Kansas City Chiefs, the team with one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in Patrick Mahomes, has witnessed Carson Wentz, former star of the Philadelphia Eagles, quietly sit on the sidelines throughout the 2024 season. Despite being selected second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz has had little to no playing time this year, stuck as a backup to Mahomes. But after a season of silence, Wentz has finally spoken out.
With no chance to showcase his skills on the field, Wentz opened up about his future with the Kansas City Chiefs. In a recent interview, he didn’t hold back, making it clear that he would not accept staying as a backup for much longer.
“Honestly, I don’t want to continue sitting on the sidelines,” Wentz said bluntly. “If things don’t change, and I’m still stuck in this backup role, I’ll consider leaving. I know I can still play in the NFL, and I don’t want my career to be sidelined anymore.”
While this might come as a shock to some, especially for someone who once shined with the Eagles, this decision isn’t all that surprising. Wentz has dealt with significant injuries over the years, and the 2024 season marked his first without substantial playing time in a team as talented as the Chiefs. His peak years with the Eagles are now in the past, and Wentz is looking for a chance to revive his career.

It’s undeniable that the Kansas City Chiefs have Mahomes, and Wentz knows there’s no spot for him in the starting role. However, the lack of an opportunity to get on the field, especially when he feels he can still contribute, is a major disappointment for him.
If Wentz does indeed decide to leave, he would be a notable name in the free agent market. While he’s no longer the star he once was, Wentz still has the experience, talent, and leadership qualities that many NFL teams would value.
With Chiefs having built a strong roster, Wentz’s departure might not have a huge impact on them, but for Wentz, it could be his final chance to find a team where he can prove himself once again. We’ll have to wait and see if he finds the right fit or if he’ll be sitting out another season.
