When talking about the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season, the spotlight is usually on the Core Four: Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. But let’s give some credit where it’s due—enter Dean Wade.
Now, Wade might not be a headline-grabber in the NBA, but in Cleveland, he’s a big deal. He’s part of a group of key supporting players making serious waves this season, alongside Max Strus, Sam Merrill, Isaac Okoro, and Javonte Green.
Wade is all about the defense and those unquantifiable contributions that don’t always make the stat sheet. You can ask Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson, who affectionately dubbed Wade “White Blanket” for his defensive prowess that makes it tough for opponents to score.
Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson adds another layer by saying Wade “drives winning,” which is not just lip service when you consider the Cavs are leading the Eastern Conference. Wade’s impact is significant in a team that’s all about stacking victories.
It’s no small feat, especially for a player who went undrafted out of Kansas State six years ago. Wade himself admits, “I was not thinking I was going to be a real defensive stopper type of player. I turned myself into that, but I never thought, especially coming out of college, that would be my role.”
And what a role it has become for the Cavs. They are delighted with his embrace of the defensive responsibilities, and it’s paying off.
“He makes us better,” Atkinson noted. “He makes us more versatile.”
While Wade might not be getting the limelight nationally, or sometimes even locally, what matters is that the Cavs value his contribution immensely. In the end, their appreciation speaks volumes about his impact on the court.
