Chargers Sign Former Eagles Super Bowl Champ

In an intriguing twist to NFL offseason maneuvers, Mekhi Becton, the powerhouse offensive lineman who had a memorable year with the Philadelphia Eagles, is packing his bags for the City of Angels. According to Tim McManus of ESPN, Becton has inked a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he’ll continue to bolster the offensive line as a guard.

A quick rewind: Becton, a towering figure at 6-foot-7 and 363 pounds, was the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Despite an early career marred by injuries, including missing the entire 2022 season due to a fractured kneecap, Becton turned heads in 2024 with the Eagles. He proved his mettle by allowing just three sacks on 450 pass-blocking snaps, a stat savvy fans will appreciate as a testament to his resilience and skill.

Pro Football Focus lent further credibility to Becton’s standout season, giving him an impressive grade of 75.2, which ranks him 21st among 135 guards. His run-blocking prowess, earning him a 74.7 grade, reveals his ability to pave the way for runners, and it’s no wonder his efforts contributed to Saquon Barkley’s phenomenal year—2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, culminating in a coveted Offensive Player of the Year award.

Becton’s journey with the Eagles reached its pinnacle by seizing victory in Super Bowl 59, where Philadelphia triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs with a decisive 40-22 win. However, football’s ever-spinning wheel of fate means there’s no rest for the ambitious, and soon he’ll face his former Eagles teammates, as they’re set to clash with the Chargers in the upcoming 2025 regular season.

Becton joins a Chargers line highlighted by two-time Pro Bowler Rashawn Slater and rising star Joe Alt, the team’s 2024 first-round gem. Under the guidance of head coach Jim Harbaugh, this formidable front will look to fortify their ranks with Becton’s talents.

Reflecting on Becton’s days with the Jets, where an unstable offensive line hampered his growth, his stint in Philadelphia showcased the difference that a stable supporting cast can make for a developing lineman. With the Chargers, the sky’s the limit for Becton. This fresh chapter in Los Angeles could indeed be the launching pad he needs to fully realize his potential.
