Dallas Goedert Reveals Contract Drama That Nearly Sent Him Out of Philly

Eagles TE Dallas Goedert just shed light on what almost led to his departure this offseason.

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a hectic offseason after winning Super Bowl 59 in February. General manager Howie Roseman has spent the last few months tinkering with the roster in hopes of the Eagles maintaining their status as championship favorites, and there’s been a decent amount of drama mixed in along the way.

A fair amount of the early offseason headlines concerned tight end Dallas Goedert’s uncertain future in Philadelphia. As beloved as the veteran pass-catcher is in the City of Brotherly Love, a combination of recent injuries and a contract without guaranteed money left Eagles fans to wonder if Goedert would be sent packing before the 2025 season even arrives.

I Know My Value': Dallas Goedert Gives Candid Thoughts On Eagles Trade Rumors

Fortunately, the Eagles and Goedert restructured his contract earlier this month, cementing his status on the 2025 roster.

Eagles TE Dallas Goedert Comments on Contract Dispute During OTAs

As Philadelphia’s 2025 organized team activities (OTAs) continue, Goedert opened up to PHLY Sports’ Zach Berman about his offseason contract saga. The 30-year-old playmaker made it clear he was open to taking a pay cut as long as it still meant being paid for what he thought he was worth.

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert 'stoked' to be back

“I’ve been very blessed to sign a good contract here. At some point, I wouldn’t want to play for less,” Goedert admitted. “I feel like I know my value. I feel like the Eagles know my value. Just finding something that I was OK with — a number that I felt excited, that my time was worth it, whatever I could do on the field, there’s a threshold I deserve.”

“I feel we were able to get there.”

After former TE1 Zach Ertz was traded to Washington during the 2021 campaign, Goedert wasted no time becoming one of the Eagles’ top weapons. His constantly improving performance earned him a four-year, $57 million extension shortly after Ertz’s departure, which included the $14.25 million he was set to make in 2025.

Eagles activate TE Dallas Goedert from the Reserve/COVID-19 list

Following the contract restructuring, Goedert will now make $10 million in guaranteed salary, as well as up to $1 million in incentives. Although shaving off over $4 million in salary caught some off guard, it was a move that helped the Eagles clear space for more offseason additions — something a true team leader would do.

A potential lack of outside interest may have also led to Goedert’s willingness to shed salary. Even though he’s one of the NFL’s better TEs, he’s now in his 30s and has missed 22 games since the start of the 2020 campaign, including 15 in the last three seasons alone. It wouldn’t be shocking if TE-hungry teams didn’t want to pay a premium price for an oft-injured, aging playmaker.

Regardless of what his future looks like, Goedert — even past his prime — leaves the Eagles better than they would be without him. He’s still a positive presence whenever he is healthy, proven by his ranking highly among eligible TEs when it came to receiving (75.8, 10th) and offense (72.6, 11th) grades on Pro Football Focus last season.

Hopefully, Goedert stays on the field more often than not in 2025 to help give the Eagles their best shot at repeating as Super Bowl Champions.
