No More Thuney — Chiefs Forced to Act with $30M Move to Protect Mahomes

As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for another Super Bowl run in 2025, one thing has become clear: protecting Patrick Mahomes remains an absolute priority. Following the departure of All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, Kansas City finds itself facing a critical gap on the offensive line.

To address this concern, the Chiefs are reportedly considering a high-stakes trade for offensive tackle Jonah Williams, who currently plays for the Arizona Cardinals under a two-year, $30 million contract.

A Costly But Necessary Response

According to Sterling Xie of Pro Football Network, Williams has emerged as a potential trade target for the Chiefs, particularly in light of the current left tackle situation. Kansas City signed Jaylon Moore this offseason, but the former 49er has just 12 career starts in 55 appearances, raising legitimate questions about his readiness to protect the blind side of the league’s most valuable quarterback.

Williams, on the other hand, brings 65 career starts, experience on both ends of the line, and the versatility that head coach Andy Reid and offensive line coach Andy Heck covet. Though his contract is hefty, the Chiefs know better than most what happens when Mahomes lacks protection — as vividly shown in Super Bowl LV.

Post-Thuney Void Too Big to Ignore

The loss of Joe Thuney cannot be understated. He was the glue of the offensive line — consistent, intelligent, and adaptable. On several occasions, Thuney even stepped into the left tackle role in emergencies, demonstrating a level of reliability that’s rare even among All-Pros.

Without him, the left side becomes a major concern. With Mahomes’ health and effectiveness dependent on a clean pocket, Kansas City cannot afford to enter the 2025 season with uncertainty at such a critical position.

A Broader Offensive Line Rebuild

This move is not just about replacing Thuney — it’s about rebuilding around a new offensive identity. The Chiefs are also exploring offensive line options in the upcoming NFL Draft, reportedly targeting prospects like Josh Simmons (Ohio State) and Josh Conerly Jr. (Oregon).

Still, rookies carry risk. For a team with championship aspirations, proven talent like Jonah Williams may offer a safer path forward — even at a high price.

The Stakes: Mahomes’ Window is Now

With Mahomes in his prime and the AFC only getting more competitive, the Chiefs are operating on a narrow margin. Every move must be calculated for immediate impact. Acquiring Williams, even at $30 million, aligns with that philosophy.

In the NFL, protecting your franchise quarterback isn’t optional — it’s foundational. The Chiefs learned that the hard way, and now, they appear ready to act.

Bottom Line: In the post-Thuney era, Kansas City has a decision to make — stick with uncertainty, or pay the price to keep Mahomes upright and the Lombardi window wide open.
