FRISCO, TX — While all eyes in Dallas are locked on the Dak Prescott contract drama and Micah Parsons’ looming extension, the Cowboys front office may be cooking up a quiet succession plan at tight end.
According to early draft chatter, Dallas has shown “strong scouting interest” in several under-the-radar tight ends — a move that some insiders see as a potential shift away from current TE1 Jake Ferguson.
“Jake’s been solid — but they might be looking for something more explosive,” one NFC scout told FanHub.
🔍 Cowboys Eyeing “Fannin-Type” Prospect on Day 2?
One name buzzing in draft rooms is Dallin Holker (Colorado State) — a 6’4″, 240-pound receiving tight end who led all FBS tight ends with 83 receptions and 970 yards in 2024.
He’s drawn comparisons to Dallas Goedert and yes — even Harold Fannin Jr., the MAC legend predicted to replace Goedert in Philly.
Holker isn’t just a receiver. He’s fluid in space, shows soft hands, and consistently wins against man coverage — something Ferguson has struggled with at times.
“This kid is a YAC machine,” said Dane Brugler. “Ferguson is reliable, but Holker can stretch the field.”
⚖️ The Ferguson Question
Jake Ferguson was a revelation after Dalton Schultz’s exit, racking up 75 receptions for 785 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. But the Cowboys’ offense lacked middle-field explosion, and Ferguson — while tough and dependable — isn’t a mismatched nightmare for defenses.
With Mike McCarthy returning and Brian Schottenheimer drawing up more vertical looks, Dallas may want a modern pass-catching weapon.
And with Ferguson entering Year 3, the timing for drafting his eventual replacement — or complement — could be now.
👀 Day 2 Targets Heating Up
Besides Holker, the Cowboys have also hosted or interviewed:
-
Jaheim Bell (Florida State) – explosive, hybrid H-back
-
Tip Reiman (Illinois) – blocking specialist with sneaky hands
-
Theo Johnson (Penn State) – red zone monster, 6’6” frame
“If Dallas pulls the trigger on one of these guys in Round 3 or 4, don’t be surprised,” one insider said. “Ferguson’s leash may be shorter than people think.”
💬 Cowboys Fans Sound Off
As usual, the fanbase is split:
“Jake earned the job. Let him grow!” – @FergieHive88
“We need a TE who can do more than 10-yard curls.” – @CowboysYAC
“Double TE sets with Holker and Ferguson? I’m here for it.” – @DakAttackFan
⏳ Quiet But Bold Moves?
While the Cowboys are known for splashy moves, sometimes it’s the subtle draft picks that shape the future. Just like they once found Witten… and then Schultz… and now Ferguson — a new name may be next.
If Holker (or another Day 2 TE) lands in Dallas, don’t be shocked.
It may be the start of the next era at tight end in Big D.
