His sudden passing has left a profound void in the hearts of the football community.
Malone collapsed during a practice session after a sprint, alerting coaches that he felt unwell. Quick to act, the coaching staff placed him in a cooling tub as his body temperature spiked to 104°F (40°C), and promptly called for emergency services.
Despite remaining alert and even speaking with coaches en route to the hospital, Malone’s condition took a devastating turn overnight. On Wednesday morning, officials from the Lancaster Independent School District confirmed the heartbreaking news of his death.
In his final moments, Malone apologized to his coach for not finishing the drill and reassured him he’d be okay—words that now echo through the grief of his teammates and community. “Preston showed leadership beyond his years,” said Superintendent A. Katrise Perera. “Our hearts are shattered, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates in this unimaginable time.”

Jalen Hurts, known for his leadership and connection to young athletes, shared a heartfelt message on X: “Preston was a warrior with a dream. Eagles Nation is with his family.” Fans across Philly have rallied online, flooding platforms with prayers and tributes, seeing Malone as more than a high school athlete but a symbol of resilience and the relentless pursuit of greatness that defines the Eagles’ spirit.
While practices have been canceled, counselors are supporting students and teammates across the district. Malone’s humility and grit continue to inspire, even as the community grapples with this sudden, overwhelming loss.
Malone’s story transcends football. Remembered as a “future MVP,” his legacy lives on as a powerful reminder of the passion, heart, and dreams that unite this sport and its community.
Details from Lancaster ISD
Officials from Lancaster ISD provided insights during a press conference following the tragedy. They had hoped for Malone’s recovery, but his condition deteriorated rapidly overnight, leading to his passing on Wednesday morning.
Coaches followed heat protocols diligently, holding the Monday practice indoors due to warm Texas weather. Players were given five two-minute water breaks and access to additional hydration as needed. The indoor facility, while lacking HVAC, featured four large open garage doors and fans for air circulation. Athletes wore only shoulder pads and shorts during the session.
“No one wants to be in this position,” said Kimberly Simpson, Lancaster ISD’s communications director. “Our staff reacted swiftly, doing exactly what I’d expect for any child in our care.”
The official cause of Malone’s death remains undisclosed. The school district is calling for community prayers and support for the family. Grief counselors will remain available at Lancaster High School and across the district through the week to assist students and staff. Football practices have been suspended for the remainder of the week.
