The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading deeper into the offseason with just two quarterbacks on their active roster. They’ve added former Miami Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson, and recently re-signed Mason Rudolph, a former third-round pick who spent last season with the Tennessee Titans.
While the team continues to hold out hope in the Aaron Rodgers saga, the reality is becoming increasingly clear: the Steelers’ long-term answer at quarterback is not currently on the roster. Stuck in a state of QB uncertainty, many believed Pittsburgh should take a flier on Joe Milton, the New England Patriots quarterback who impressed with a strong performance in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills.
But before the Steelers could make a move, the Dallas Cowboys swooped in. According to reports, Dallas acquired Milton — along with a 2025 seventh-round pick — in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick. The trade comes shortly after the Patriots brought in veteran QB Josh Dobbs, making Milton’s departure feel all but inevitable.
Given the circumstances, the deal feels like a missed opportunity for Pittsburgh. With their quarterback future in limbo and a potential Rodgers move still uncertain, using a late-round pick on a high-upside talent like Milton would have been a low-risk gamble — and arguably more appealing than using that capital on less proven names like Will Howard or Tyler Shough.

In that Week 18 showing versus the Bills, Milton completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and accounted for two total touchdowns. For a Steelers team stuck in quarterback purgatory, a move like that might’ve been worth making.
