Steelers Replace Pickens With Pro Bowl Star, Metcalf–Allen Duo Set to Dominate AFC North

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a seismic free agency splash, signing 5-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper to a two-year, $36 million deal, sources told ESPN on May 7, 2025. The move comes after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, pairing Cooper with DK Metcalf to revamp the offense.

Pickens, 24, was dealt for a 2026 third-round pick and a late-round pick swap, ending a tumultuous tenure marked by 900 yards in 2024 but off-field issues. The trade left a void at WR2, prompting GM Omar Khan to target Cooper, a proven veteran from the free agent market.

Cooper, 30, brings elite route-running and reliability. His 2024 season—44 catches, 547 yards, and 4 touchdowns across stints with the Browns and Bills—marked a career low, but his 7 seasons over 1,000 yards and 75.2 PFF grade showcase his value, per NFL.com.

“Amari’s a game-changer,” Khan told reporters. “He and DK will stretch defenses thin.” With $32 million in cap space, the Steelers secured Cooper to complement Metcalf’s deep-threat prowess, addressing a passing attack ranked 24th (186.1 yards per game) in 2024.

The Steelers’ offense, still without a QB1 as Mason Rudolph holds the interim role and Will Howard develops, needs weapons. Cooper’s sure hands (3 drops in 2024) and mentorship could elevate Calvin Austin III and rookie Roman Wilson, who struggled with injuries in 2024.

Cooper’s signing follows a busy offseason, with Za’Darius Smith, Stephon Gilmore, and Mike Hilton bolstering the defense. Khan’s aggressive moves signal a win-now mentality, but the absence of a franchise quarterback—despite talks with Aaron Rodgers—remains a concern.

Fans on X are buzzing, with posts like “Cooper and Metcalf? Defenses are toast!” and “Khan’s fixing Tomlin’s mess!” ESPN’s Brooke Pryor noted, “Cooper’s polish balances Metcalf’s raw power, but Pittsburgh needs a QB to unlock this duo.”

As OTAs approach, Cooper’s arrival resets expectations. With Pat Freiermuth commanding the middle and Kaleb Johnson powering the run, the Steelers’ offense could finally ignite—if they solve the quarterback puzzle. For now, Cooper’s signing is a bold step forward.
