The Pittsburgh Steelers have assigned jersey numbers to three players signed following rookie minicamp, according to the team’s website.
Running back Trey Sermon will wear No. 27, running back Max Hurleman will wear No. 34, and offensive tackle Gareth Warren will wear No. 69.
Sermon, a veteran entering his fifth NFL season, may be a familiar name to Steelers fans. He rushed for 88 yards against Pittsburgh while playing for the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 a game Indianapolis won 30-13. Originally a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, Sermon said he believed he was headed to Pittsburgh on draft night.
“I thought they were gonna draft me,” Sermon said following rookie minicamp. “I talked to them throughout the whole process quite a bit, met with them at the combine.”
Instead, the Steelers selected Najee Harris with the 24th overall pick that year. With Harris now departed, the Steelers have reshaped their backfield, adding third-round pick Kaleb Johnson out of Iowa, former Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell, and potentially Sermon and Hurleman as contributors.
Hurleman had a unique college journey. He began his career at Colgate, playing running back for his first two seasons before switching to wide receiver during his redshirt junior year. In his final collegiate season, he transferred to Notre Dame, where he was listed as a cornerback but made his biggest impact as a punt returner.
Gareth Warren, a towering 6-foot-5, 338-pound offensive lineman from Lindenwood, came in as an undrafted free agent. While he primarily played tackle in college, Warren also logged snaps at guard, showcasing valuable versatility. Known for his power in the run game, he helped anchor a Lions offensive line that averaged 134 rushing yards per game in 2024. Warren will likely compete for a backup role behind 2024 first-round pick Troy Fautanu and third-year tackle Broderick Jones.
These jersey numbers apply to the 90-man offseason roster and do not guarantee a spot on the 53-man regular-season roster. All three players will have a chance to earn a place on the team when organized team activities begin May 27. OTAs will continue through June, followed by a three-day mandatory minicamp and then training camp, which does not yet have an official start date.
