What are the Pittsburgh Steelers planning at the quarterback position? This question must have been asked a ton of times since the NFL Draft began on Thursday.
The Steelers passed on Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart in the first round. Then, the Steelers passed on Sanders multiple times throughout the draft.
By the end of the draft, the Steelers did select a QB – Ohio State’s Will Howard. The Steelers took Howard at No. 185 overall, which came in the sixth round. Does it make sense? Not really. Furthermore, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and Howard in the QB room. That’s it.
So, even Bill Bender of Sporting News was surprised and he had the Steelers as one of his losers.
“If Aaron Rodgers isn’t a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback plan in 2025, then this draft was puzzling. Maybe worse than puzzling.”
“Ohio State’s Will Howard was a sixth-round pick at No. 185. Unless Mike Tomlin is looking at Howard as the next Tom Brady, then it is fair to wonder who Pittsburgh’s starter will be. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the only other quarterbacks on the roster, and Pittsburgh passed on quarterbacks such as Jaxson Dart and Shedeur Sanders.”
“Howard is a good value pick in the sixth round, but is that enough to keep up in a division that features Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson?”
If Rodgers does come, maybe this makes sense. If not? Well, a starting QB of Howard or Rudolph throwing passes to DK Metcalf and George Pickens is questionable, at best.
It’s definitely confusing, but maybe the Steelers know something that the rest of the NFL world doesn’t.
