Santa Clara, CA – September 24, 2025
The San Francisco 49ers wasted no time addressing roster depth, finalizing a one-year deal with defensive back Shilo Sanders on Thursday, just days after hosting him for a workout in Santa Clara.
According to the NFL Transaction Wire, Sanders’ workout came less than a month after a surprising career twist. Back on August 29, following his release from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and clearing waivers, Sanders said he was preparing for life beyond football — exploring acting, music, and modeling.
Now, in a stunning reversal, Sanders has committed to an NFL comeback, with the 49ers providing the stage. His performance during the tryout impressed staff with athleticism, energy, and a hunger to prove himself.
The move comes as San Francisco adjusts to the emotional blow of losing Nick Bosa for the season. While Sanders won’t replace a pass rusher, the team hopes his versatility at safety and special teams can inject fresh energy into the locker room.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan welcomed the signing, saying “We know Shilo still has a lot to prove, but he showed hunger and energy. We believe he can help us right away, especially on special teams.”
At Colorado, Sanders built a reputation as a hard-hitting safety, finishing his senior season with 67 tackles and two interceptions. His aggressive style and competitiveness carry the trademark confidence long associated with the Sanders name.
For Shilo, this chance is about redemption. “I know what people say — I’m here to prove I belong. The 49ers gave me a chance, and I’m going to give this team everything I have,”
he told reporters after signing.
On paper, it’s a depth signing. But for the 49ers, the real question looms: can Shilo Sanders turn this second chance — just weeks after nearly walking away from football — into a lasting role with a franchise chasing another Super Bowl?
