Kansas City, MO – September 5, 2025
— Authorities in Kansas City arrested a Chargers fan on Thursday evening after he allegedly made armed threats toward Chiefs fans outside GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, just moments before kickoff of the high-stakes Chiefs vs. Chargers Week 1 showdown.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Ruiz, 34, of San Diego, California, has been charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, carrying a firearm without a license, and disorderly conduct, officials confirmed.

According to police, the confrontation erupted around 6:45 a.m. in Lot C, where tailgating crowds were gathering in anticipation of the primetime AFC West clash. Witnesses said the man, decked out in Chargers gear, got into a heated verbal exchange and brandished a handgun while shouting threats at nearby Chiefs fans.

Security staff quickly intervened and subdued the suspect before Kansas City police arrived. Officers recovered a loaded 9mm pistol and additional ammunition from his possession. Thankfully, no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The area was briefly locked down as authorities interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage. Within minutes, the situation was declared safe and fans were allowed to resume pregame celebrations leading up to kickoff.

Officials praised the swift actions of stadium security and law enforcement. “Our first priority is fan safety,” a Kansas City police spokesperson said. “Thanks to immediate intervention, this situation was contained without any harm.”

In response, Arrowhead Stadium implemented enhanced security screenings at all gates, requiring every fan to undergo additional bag checks and metal detector scans. Despite the alarming scare, the highly anticipated Chiefs vs. Chargers rivalry clash proceeded on schedule.

The incident highlights the intensity of one of the AFC West’s most heated rivalries — and served as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance on NFL game days.
