In one of the most unexpected but intriguing casting decisions of the year, HBO has officially announced a biopic about Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the lead role.

Titled “Big Red: The Andy Reid Story,” the film is set to chronicle Reid’s four-decade journey in professional football — from his beginnings as an offensive assistant in Green Bay, to his 14-season run with the Philadelphia Eagles, and finally to his Super Bowl-winning legacy in Kansas City.

Downey Jr., best known for portraying Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and recently acclaimed for his role in Oppenheimer, is set to tackle a very different kind of hero. In a statement released Tuesday, the actor called Reid’s story “a portrait of resilience, reinvention, and quiet genius.”

“Coach Reid’s path wasn’t filled with easy wins or flash,” Downey said. “It’s about building people, evolving systems, and staying true to who you are — even when the world demands otherwise.”

The film is expected to highlight not only Reid’s triumphs — three Super Bowl titles, two league MVPs under his quarterbacks, and over 250 career wins — but also the emotional lows: his early playoff losses, his departure from Philadelphia, and the tragic loss of his son Garrett in 2012.
According to HBO insiders, the project has been in development for over a year, with direct input from Reid’s family, former players, and longtime colleagues. NFL Films is also reportedly collaborating to provide archival footage and behind-the-scenes access from Reid’s most iconic games.
HBO Sports executive Mark Wilson said the choice of Downey wasn’t just about box office appeal:
“We needed someone who could channel both the humor and the heartbreak. Andy Reid is more than a coach — he’s a culture-changer. And Robert got that.”
Production is expected to begin in late 2025, with a targeted release in fall 2026 on HBO and Max.
As one Chiefs fan wrote on X:
“Only Iron Man could play Big Red.”
And honestly? They might be right.
