Kansas City’s training camp is where rookies earn their stripes and fight for a place in one of the NFL’s most high-powered offenses. The race for roster spots is fierce, especially in a backfield known for speed and versatility.
The coaching staff has focused on finding playmakers who can produce in multiple ways. All-purpose ability, reliability, and explosive potential have become priorities for a Chiefs offense built on creativity and mismatches.
A late-round rookie joined camp with an eye-popping college résumé. Despite playing just one season at SMU, his numbers were jaw-dropping: 1,332 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns, and a total of 1,977 all-purpose yards—good for fourth in the nation.
That rookie is Brashard Smith, a versatile weapon who quickly turned heads in his first weeks with the Chiefs. His blend of speed, vision, and pass-catching ability earned him First-Team All-ACC and Third-Team AP All-American honors in 2024.
Unfortunately, Smith’s rookie year hit a major setback after an injury in camp. The Chiefs placed him on injured reserve, putting his debut season on hold. “Injuries don’t break me — they build me. I’m using this time to sharpen my mind, rebuild my body, and come back meaner. This jersey means everything. And when I return, I’m coming back with fire — for Kansas City.”
Coaches praised Smith’s professionalism and explosive play, saying his work ethic and dynamic skillset made him a natural fit in Andy Reid’s system. Teammates rallied around the rookie, offering support as he starts his rehab journey.
With Smith out, Kansas City will look to other young backs to step up in camp. Every practice rep now takes on extra importance as players vie for a coveted spot in the running back rotation.
As the Chiefs look to defend their championship, fans will keep an eye on Smith’s recovery—eager to see him back on the field and adding firepower to an already potent Kansas City offense.
