Drake Maye’s OTA struggles raise red flags — should Brissett start Week 1?

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye reportedly had a day to forget in practice at Tuesday’s organized team activities (OTAs).

The No. 3 pick of the 2024 NFL Draft showed promise in his rookie season with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions despite a lackluster supporting cast. The Patriots brought in plenty of offensive reinforcements and overhauled their coaching staff, highlighted by the returns of Mike Vrabel (head coach) and Josh McDaniels (offensive coordinator).

So a big second year is expected of Drake Maye, which makes the update on his performance at OTAs worrisome for Patriots fans.

According to Mark Daniels of MassLive.com, Maye threw four interceptions on his first eight pass attempts. Standout cornerback Christian Gonzalez had two of the interceptions, with Dell Pellus and rookie Craig Woodson recording the others.

The silver lining is that Maye settled down after the four interceptions and completed seven of his final eight pass attempts. Still, throwing that many picks in a practice of all sessions isn’t an inspiring start to the offseason.

Then again, it’s better for Drake Maye to get the bad throws out of his system now before the regular season begins in September.

The Patriots spent aplenty in free agency to upgrade their roster, beefing up the o-line with the additions of Garrett Bradbury and Morgan Mose.

They brought in All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs and ex-Buffalo Bills standout Mack Hollins to improve the WR room, before drafting offensive tackle Will Campbell, Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson and Washington State WR Kyle Williams.

Say what you want about McDaniels’ failed head coaching stints, but he got the most out of Matt Cassel when Tom Brady suffered a torn ACL in 2008, and Mac Jones played his best football with the longtime OC calling the shots in 2021.
