The last time an unknown wide receiver out of Eastern Washington made it to the NFL, he won the wide receivers’ Triple Crown.
Of course, history doesn’t always repeat itself.
But, as shown by Los Talks Pats on X, Efton Chism III and Cooper Kupp have some things in common, such as being the only two players in program history with at least 300 career receptions:
“Former Eastern Washington WR Efton Chism III is one of two players in school history to surpass 300 career receptions. The other? Cooper Kupp. The only logical and coherent takeaway from this is that the #Patriots have the next Cooper Kupp on their roster,” Lopez posted on X.
The Patriots have a long history of finding great value in undrafted free agency, and Chism was one of the more than 15 guys they signed after the NFL Draft.
Chism spent five years with the Eagles, turning plenty of heads at a lesser level of collegiate football.
He even broke Cooper Kupp’s record with 120 receptions last season, adding 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns across 12 appearances
All in all, the young speedster left college with 346 receptions for a whopping 3,852 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns in 53 games.
He also broke another one of Kupp’s records by recording at least one reception in 53 consecutive games, meaning he never went catchless in a single game in college.
Chism knows how to get open and make the most of his speed, as he showed with an impressive performance at the Shrine Bowl.
While he rarely squared off against high-end competition, his ability to get open in one-on-one situations should translate to the pros.
Of course, making the 53-man roster will be an uphill battle for any undrafted wide receiver, but Chism has the intangibles and experience to be the exception to that rule.
