The New England Patriots made multiple additions to their linebacker room in the offseason. They added Jack Gibbens and Robert Spillane in the offseason, while keeping the leading tackler from 2024, Jahlani Tavai, on the roster.
However, during OTAs, Tavai appeared to suffer a leg injury, as he was helped off the field during practice. Now, a day later, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update on the Patriots linebacker following his injury scare.
“Patriots LB Jahlani Tavai… suffered a calf injury during OTA’s Monday that is now expected to sideline him until training camp,” Schefter wrote. “The news is fortunate in that Tavai could hardly put any pressure on his leg as he was being helped off the practice field by Jabrill Peppers.”
The update on Tavai’s injury is a horrible one, in that a calf issue can linger for a long time. Tavai, the leading tackler for the Patriots in 2024, will miss an extended period of time during the offseason training program.
With a new defensive system due to the influx of new personnel, Tavai missing time is a tough blow to the chemistry on defense. While he is expected back around training camp, the news isn’t great, as Tavai will miss key time to acclimate to his new teammates.
In his place, Gibbens and Christian Elliss will get the majority of the work alongside Spillane. The loss of Tavai is a tough blow, especially with the Patriots’ crop of linebackers all being unfamiliar with each other.
Tavai is coming off his best season across his six-year career as an NFL pro. He had 115 tackles, leading the Patriots, along with one sack, seven tackles for loss, and one interception in 2024.
The Patriots will be without their leading tackler through the beginning of the offseason training period, and he could miss time leading into training camp.
While the news of Tavai’s injury is horrible for the team, it’s fortunate that it doesn’t affect the regular season, nor that it’s season-ending.
