Returning Patriots Star Pinpoints Fatal Flaw Behind Team’s Struggles

The New England Patriots welcomed back one of their key offensive pieces after a difficult personal period.

Rhamondre Stevenson had been absent from voluntary workouts following the loss of his father in March.

Now back with the team, the running back addressed reporters for the first time since his return.

After completing a workout, Stevenson opened up about his journey while highlighting what he considers the most critical area for improvement this season.

“The biggest thing’s ball security. I feel like that’s the obvious answer to everybody here. But just getting some wins under our belt, and not shooting ourselves in the foot. And that is ball security. So trying to be good with the ball, 100 percent ball security, so we can get some wins under our belt,” Stevenson said, via Tom Carroll of WEEI.

Stevenson enters his fifth NFL season with a distinct advantage over many of his teammates as one of the few offensive players with experience under coordinator Josh McDaniels.

How Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson went from Wal-Mart to the NFL

As a rookie in 2021, Stevenson played during McDaniels’ final year before the coach departed for the Las Vegas Raiders.

With McDaniels back on Mike Vrabel’s new staff, Stevenson already understands the system’s foundation. However, the playbook won’t mirror previous versions entirely.

McDaniels revealed that he’s incorporating new concepts, including schemes he’s never coached before. This brings fresh elements to a familiar framework.

Despite missing early sessions, Stevenson’s role in the offense remains secure.

Antonio Gibson stayed active throughout the voluntary program, while TreVeyon Henderson, a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, joins a backfield featuring two veterans who can accelerate his development.

The Patriots appear well-positioned at running back as they prepare for the upcoming season.
